Fabulous City Night

A very er... happy man is going out for a night in the city!

Somehow this came into existence while I was messing around with FM parameters, and then I tried to make it as cheesy as possible.

P.S. I'm sorry.

Is there anyway you could possible share your module file with me? I want to learn how you did that "trance" style thing in the background using YM2612. That's a pretty impressive subtractive synth sound, and I know you're changing up the multipliers, and spanning at least 2 channels with that puppy.

Sure. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/59931286/Fabulous%20City%20Night.vge

It's not too complicated. Just altering the MULTI parameter for operator 2 on the fly, mixed with some very rapid panning.

Oh wow! Thank you! I appreciate you sharing that. Yeah, VGMM is pretty much my favorite interface. I use Deflemask when I want finer control over the PSG arps and ADSR.

Have you ever played around with Channel 3 Special mode? You'll get polyphony of 4 sine notes from that one channel. I've been doing a lot of experimenting with it lately.

Also, you're always welcome to PM me on SoundCloud if you want to share a module privately, or just chat it up. :3

Take care!

Yeah, I have played around with Special mode, although it isn't implemented properly in either VGM MM or Deflemask, and I have been wanting to use it for its actual potential for a long time now.

Not at all in Deflemask... no controls for it, though it is in the core programming to support it. Would be nice.

You can use the multipliers to change the octal range of each operator separately from each other, and get almost total pitch control for each one. Although it takes a bit of tinkering and a workaround.

Algo 7 is the nicest I've found for chords, and pseudo saw chords when you bump the Feedback up to 6 or 7. Using the AMS creates an interesting ambience as well for fading chords in and out.

Yeah, using FM Drive VST or programming in assembly yourself is the only way to get real total control for Special Mode. I still enjoy what can be done with VGMM, though.

Also... you can get major sine chords with any FM channel... chords of 3. Check out this recording from Deflemask: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2C16041iMhgMVE4VUNyNHd5TjQ

The sine chords are coming out of Channel 1. I analyzed Tim Follin's Time Trax, and found that he was changing the multipliers for sine chords for a single channel, multiple times within the song on the same note, I believe. That guy was going crazy! :)

So there's so many cool tricks with this sound chip.
