about ntrq (missing information in the lyceum): which emulators are recommended? i tried fceux, but it uses a kind of compressed .sav format, and doesn't open those 8kb .sav demos from ntrq...

(i think i'm not going to list formats as well since i'm about to try something on all of them, probably not submitting those i really struggle)

Hello, nitrofurano!

I recommend to use one of three emulators, named as, Bizhawk, Mesen, or puNES: TASVideos' website host a table of emulators' performance against accuracy tests, and currently the three aforementioned emulators: Scores the maximum points the combination audio processor tests they were subjected at, can give! Here are hyperlinks to either their official repositories or websites' download pages:

Bizhawk:
https://github.com/TASVideos/BizHawk/releases/

Mesen:
https://mesen.ca/

puNES:
https://github.com/punesemu/puNES/releases

Mesen also is distributed as a libretro core, which may be downloaded for use in the Retroarch emulator front-end, available for many host systems and homebrew-enabled video game consoles! One may download a Retroarch emulator front-end for libretro cores for, from the web page this hyperlink goes to:
https://www.retroarch.com/?page=platforms

The result of the aforementioned accuracy tests are displayed in the article the next hyperlink leads at:
http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/NESAccuracyTests.html

Cheers!

Hello, Oli!
and well...
- puNES uses .pns as savestate file (i was looking for one that could support 8kb .sav files, as (almost) mentioned at the lyceum (almost, because .sav from Fceux is incompatible) )
- Mesen crashes on Wine: (Unhandled exception 0xe0434352 in thread 9 at address 7B032F82. Do you wish to debug it?)
- BizHawk seems to run on Mono (a.k.a. .net, i guess) runtime, and crashes when opening
perhaps older emulators could be better?

The 8kb .sav files bundled in the release NTRQ archive are a dump of the SRAM sector of memory in a NES game, which is also where the data of a NTRQ project resides; savestates are a dump of the whole memory- which includes the SRAM sector of it, and may be stored in a custom container file with an emulator or format-specific header; savestates aren't distributed in the NTRQ package.

puNES stores SRAM files in the next folder path:
(System drive letter):\(users folder)\(currently logged user)\My Documents\puNES\prb\

In my case, it is this folder path:
C:\users\sandbox\My Documents\puNES\prb

In Linux, using wine, that directory may be found at this folder path:
~/.wine/drive_c/users/(currently logged user)/My Documents/puNES/prb

with the filename of the ROM loaded, and a .pbp extension, rather than a .sav one; other than the distinct extension, they are same: One can copy the file named as ntrq-example.sav in the NTRQ archive, to the aforementioned prb folder, and rename it as any of the three, ntrq.prb, ntrq_NTSC.prb, or ntrq_PAL.prb, depending on which of the three ROMs in the NTRQ package, ntrq.nes, ntrq_NTSC.nes or ntrq_PAL.nes, you do intend to use, respectively.

Mesen works well for me in Mono, by opening it with the next command:
mono Mesen.exe

The mono program may be installed via a package manager on a Linux distribution on may use; instructions for, depends on the package manager a Linux distribution may be using: May you desire to install it, please query a web search engine for instructions on.

On Arch Linux, one may use the a package manager named as pacman to, with the next command:
sudo pacman -Sy mono

Does opening it using mono rather than wine, works in the environment you are using?

Upon the first time opening it, it will ask about whether to store data in the application folder, or the user folder, defaulting to the later option: Mesen saves SRAM files with the filename of a ROM loaded, and a .sav extension, in a folder named as Saves: If one chooses for Mesen to store data on the user folder, one can find the folder where Mesen stores SRAM files in the next folder path:
~/.config/mesen/Saves

To load the example provided in the NTRQ archive with NTRQ, on Mesen, one may copy the file ntrq-example.nes in the NTRQ archive to the aforementioned Saves folder, and rename it to one of three, ntrq.sav, ntrq_NTSC.sav, or ntrq_PAL.sav, depending on which of the three ROMs in the NTRQ archive you use, then open the ROM by selecting the file; Mesen looks for the content of a SRAM file matching the filename of the ROM, when loading one in this way: If one previously loaded a ROM, it may be displayed on the emulator portion of the screen, from where one may also load it; however, upon loading a ROM using this menu, it will automatically load a savestate that by default Mesen creates when leaving a ROM, without regard of a SRAM file.

The Linux version of Bizhawk does works for me, calling the script withing the archive, after untarring it, with the next command:
./EmuHawkMono.sh

It stores SRAM files in the folder NES/SaveRAM relative to the executable: Using either, ntrq.nes, or ntrq_NTSC.nes, will create a SRAM file in the aforementioned folder, with the next filename:
NTRQ - NES Music Tracker v1.8NTSC by Neil Baldwin (PD).SaveRAM

When closing either ROM or emulator; if one uses ntrq_PAL.nes, it will create a SRAM file in, with the next filename instead:
NTRQ - NES Music Tracker v1.8PAL by Neil Baldwin (PD).SaveRAM

One may try the example NTRQ project provided in the NTRQ archive, by moving the file ntrq-example.sav in, to the previously mentioned folder named as SaveRAM, and rename it to either this filename:
NTRQ - NES Music Tracker v1.8NTSC by Neil Baldwin (PD).SaveRAM

If one intends to load that example project in any of both the ntrq.nes ROM, or the ntrq_NTSC.nes ROM in: If one intends to load the example project in ntrq_PAL.nes, ntrq-example.sav must be renamed to have the next filename, instead:
NTRQ - NES Music Tracker v1.8PAL by Neil Baldwin (PD).SaveRAM

You are welcome to share here about how making a setup for using NTRQ goes for you, and also to ask about any regarding the process of, or otherwise, if anything, nitrofurano!

@kleeder which nestopia version you used? 1.40 uses .nst format for load/save state, and found no access to sram dumps there - no idea how to use .sav there (in the worst scenario i'm a bit concerned about depending on conversions that would affect the iteration process... :S )

@Oli thanks that i had no idea that Mesen was a mono-based emulator - so i imagine that what differs sram dumps from savestates is that savestates also stores cpu registers? thanks for all info (i need to try everything and get used to the whole process - as distro i'm using Ubuntu 20.10 mostly (and BunsenLabs quite rarely) ) - anyway, i think that would be great having all that info (perhaps getting eventually more polished as documentation, regarding all emulators supporting 8kb .sav format, progressively?) somewhere in the lyceum? (i can't remember if level 8 is enough for editing it, or perhaps we can even use an etherpad link temporarily for that)

Yes - Ideally; there currently isn't a standard data structure format specification for NES emulators's to design their way to store a savestate file; so developers of, may come with their own ways to, and are free to decide what data of the machine gets saved in, and how: Ideally; they save the whole state of a system, including the registers and memory of every processor used in a particular game, along information about the system emulated, as region, state of physical dipswitches, and so on.

A .sav file, contains a portion of the main memory in a NES or Famicom system, between it's memory addresses 0x6000 and 0x7fff, inclusive, which is 0x2000 bytes long in hexadecimal, or 8192 bytes, or 8K bytes long in decimal: The 8K sector of memory between the, including, addresses 0x6000 and 0x7ff, is denominated as save RAM, or SRAM: It commonly was a RAM memory in a cartridge fed with a battery; for it to keep data stored after a system is powered off.

this sounds like a job for: the extension (tm)

[new idea: if you submit to a format with less than x% entries compared to the total amount, you get y boons. this way we might create more interest in less common formats aka why is everyone allgearing if we have such beautiful formats like pandatracker :O

where from can we find good vcvrack and munt tutorials, simple and useful enough for helping us submitting something in this week? ;) - talking about mt-32, is submitting a midi file (made from whatever editor) that plays fine on munt (mt32emu) enough, since it seems only supposed to get the audio rendering from there?

In theory, you could just submit a normal midi file that you've never even heard played on munt, and just let everyone else put it through munt. It would be unlikely to work musically as the instrument numbers are quite different, but it would be perfectly valid!

thanks! about mt32 it seems that the channel 0 isn't played - as i tried from aria maestosa, just keeping the first track empty seems enough - found that even in the lyceum here we can find a kind of "rosetta stone" of instruments ( https://battleofthebits.org/lyceum/View/Specification%20of%20General%20MIDI%20and%20Roland%20MT-32%20patches ) - now i have 6 days for finding out what vcvrack is about! :) (i can't get any sound out of that i have no idea why...)

I just noticed how many MT-32 entries there are and wow! That rules and makes me HAPPY. (also hell yeah of course at all the MSGS). Really excited to hear all of these. Spring Tracks has always been my favorite of the recurring majors.
I completely forgot to submit my VCV entry so maybe next time. Sure would be fun to have another yearly Tracks comp imho :3

In any case, main point of posting:
Life got chaotic but I'll be back at it probably next week and I'll get all 12 of those MT-32 badboys hardware rendered!! My apologies if you DMed me for one and I still haven't done it

My basement studio flooded with over an inch of standing water Friday night. Most of my stuff was rescued (moved up stairs while it was happening) but there are 8-10 boxes of possessions I need to go through that are probably destroyed. Besides that, I am still trying to work through what electronics are shorting out and which are not. The stream is supposed to start in about 10 minutes, but I am not ready. I am pushing it back for another week. All n00bs.
