Hey guys!

So there has been plenty of discourse over the past few years over what Shoegaze actually is. When you have an esoteric genre name like that, everybody and their grandma wants in on teh sweet scene cred. But for me(my opinion being the correct one, of course), the genre can be boiled down to two simple elements:

Heavy gain, "whoosh of sound" electric guitars
+
Breathy, shy and/or disaffected vocals

It's the contrast of these two basic elements which makes the genre. No, your ambient synth drone album isn't Shoegaze just because you used a lot of reverb. But chipchamp! I have no inclination or the proper equipment to sing! Substitute, be creative, improvise!

Further elements to consider:

Psychedelic styled riffs
Crisp, light drum sounds to cut through the dense mix
Slower tempos
Big, slow pitch bends from whammy bar or vibrato effect
MORE guitar pedals
Chorus or other modulation for "clean" riffs
Depression

And since Pukers already mentioned Loveless and Lush, here are some other references:

oooo.... oooh I think I have a really fitting tune that i made back in 2018 that I could finish up for this!!!! :D

edit: listened to that one. It's too MIDIsh sounding.... If I maybe could record a nice drum-groove from my acoustic drums to build up from?....

Btw shoegaze is a really nice genre overall a precious gift to humanity!
