The New OHB Policies

There's been some hurbabble and kurfluffin over One Hour Battles. BotB has introduced an updated OHB hosting paradigm. The aim is to make hosting a bit more prestigious; to be taken in a certain light.

New Hosting Requirements
A BotBr must have participated in at least 3 OHBs, have submitted 10 entries in the format they desire to host (this entry count is from ALL battle types), and have b750 ready for a deposit which will be returned when the battle completes with 3 or more entries. Admins can host an OHB with any format and are exempt from the 10 entry clause.

Bitpacks
I want to talk about bitpacks. Bitpacks are the backbone to any BotB battle. A good bitpack sets a tone that resonates through all the entries it inspires. I'm not pointing fingers or saying too many people are sucking at bitpacks. Poor bitpacks do happen, however, and I'd like to set a bar or a model to follow.

A good bitpack is a strong tangible theme, a specific technical challenge, and/or a .zip file with unique bits (samples,colors,etc..) that all BotBrs in the battle work with collectively. 'do whatevs' or 'upload anything' are not good bitpacks and hosts that do that from now on will be grounded (PARASITE) from hosting as long as the BotB Admins see fit.

Side Notes
The raise in the deposit is simply because b250 is hardly a risk for anyone who's been here over a year and consistently participated. If you don't have b750 but have the other requirements to host you can ask a fellow BotBr for some charity. I was considering raising the deposit to b2500! But I didn't. ;)

If you want to host a format, but lack the entry count, then suggest it to an admin. Do that enough times and you'll eventually unlock that format. Admins will soon also be able to set OHBs (or minor battles) to longer lengths and start up to a week away for extra boons.

I know a lot of BotBrs are not so hot about these kinds of changes. This was a hard decision, it required a bit of work, but ultimately I believe this mechanical insulation will improve relations over time. ALL NOOBZ!!

24 Intense BotB Hours

So, yesterday, while out gallivanting in meat space, my phone started blowing up with twitter texts about a certain BotBr named lyceumexploiter leveling up in record increments and time. Meanwhile this OHB occurred rendering a brilliant mootbooxle track where he narrated my night as it was probably happening in parallel real time. Except I didn't bail right then to find out what was going on, I waited until the following hungover morning.

Ok. So someone found an exploit? Do we know what to do when we find something like that? Let's go over it! You tell me or an admin and then ignore it. It's really that easy.

Now. In reaction to this, admins and myself have decided to add a couple more BotBr ailments so we can ground n00bs. I can't believe after all these years BotB has to have measurements of punishment. :(

HertzDevil, Kajingsol and goluigi! I'm sorry but yer all grounded for a hot minute. You three are all scrubs right now. You've also lost your pedagogist points (except for careful, nimble goluigi).

Soiled Bargains! I've butt heads with you and others about this before. There is no "upload whatever you want" format on BotB. The format 'allgear' is an audio format. It is not a graphic format. It is not a zip file format. It messes with the whole point system. If there was an "upload anything" format it would have to award OHB points solely. You have been marked as a parasite. You are not a host. For now.

This has been a rather crazy, sit-at-home BotB day! For those of you who don't know, I am also Baron Knoxburry. I was planning on working on b-knox tracks for WC8 today but noooOOOOooo. Hoping to get a couple in...

Anyways, the admins and I have new tools. I have certain ideas about how people should behave to show respect for BotB and I believe that the admins have my back on all this. If they didn't they wouldn't be admins! :P

And if any of you see kfraday, give him a hi five because he's a sweet peach! :3

Merry 2013!

We just survived the most anticipated Armageddon of our generation. I don't know about you, but the number 13 is the scariest thing ever and now there are 20 of them! I have big hopes that this year will bring in a new BotB version, one that select BotBrs have a hand in assisting and developing. Plus 2013 should bring us new battle types and formats beyond music!

999 One Hour Battles!

It's rather hard to believe. Yesterday the nine hundred and ninety-ninth OHB took place. This was just 7 days shy of the first OHC's seven year anniversary. Over this period there have been 5176 entries for an average of 5.1816 entries per OHB. Another 7 years! Another 1000 tracks!!! :D

Battle of the Bits is Seven Years Old

It's hard for me to believe, but seven years ago today I launched BotB publicly on teh interwebs. It wasn't much then, just enough to get the ball rolling on Detroit I with user signup and sample uploads. The rest of what was needed to finish the battle was rolled out just in time. Thanks to the wayback machine you can see it as it was way back then right here! ...or see how it looked the following December when it fully hosted battles here.

No Ann Arbor this year?

I;ve been a very busy little beaver. I have been building a mad amount of dams from harvested corn husks. BotB's incredulous servers will soon be running on 100% organic high-fructose hydraulic power.

As such, we are quickly reaching the end to 2011's final quarter and fiscal year. Promises were made by the county director's office to oversea future battle assemblies but they merely shrugged their shoulders. As raw and poetic that may appear to be, we here, the fellows and n00bs of the BotBr fellowship, have thusly assembled solely for battles. Battle this, battle that. Battle. Battle. battles . . .

There will be no Ann Arbor party this year. I haven't the energy or time to organize such an event. But there is an alternatively, and rather better version to this story. In the second year of BotB, previous to any concept of a dedicated website, said year was replete with two such 25 sample 48 hour type battles. Since BotB celebrated Ann Arbor XI last year, this years Ann Arbor version and anniversary number could be no larger a sum than nine point five.

BotB technically, and on paper, refuses to commit any action plan with whole hearted half efforts. Thus, in the immediate present, I do suggest to the fellow BotBrs : articulate battle ideas that will work in the current BotB system to keep us all in a state of busy beaver action. Winter Chip VII will be in January (as to not interfere with write an album in a February month).
