~A game about perception~

I tried the vanilla JS thing. The game code is just 1 JS file and it's very long. Reading the code is actually a better adventure than playing the game because I, um, I've coded a trainwreck.

The audio works best in Chrome but you really should play it in Firefox because there are some graphics at the end that don't quite work in Chrome.

Controls are in the readme.txt.

Enjoy!

wtf one would think 3-blade fidget spinners are already evil but when a 6-blade one shows up out of nowhere and fucks your shit up, you know they're not to be messed with.

I was hyped for this and you didn't disappoint. 7/7

Nice use of CJK monospace characters.

Also, please don't use backspace key, it defaults to going back to the previous page in many browsers.

I'm pretty damn impressed. Looks great, sounds great, and it's pretty serviceable for a jrpg made in just over a week.
love the sanity map distortion effect, thought the game was bugging out at first

pretty impressive given the time limit and restrictions. the UI and the world actually look nice. the music is wonderful. the concepts per se are cool, but to me they felt stale because they've been explored near-verbatim in games before—sanity in amnesia and i think nearly any game set in the cthulhu mythos; mind-body dualism in e.g. earthbound, which clearly influenced this game in other ways; and struggle against the incomprehensible, which is present in any of the aforementioned games.

gripe #1: i expect that when i tap an arrow key, the cursor or character will always move one space. instead, this game seems to poll to see whether the key is held down periodically, which results in nothing happening sometimes.

gripe #2: i'm not sure what criteria are necessary to meet before shrek will fight you. i got stuck there for a while. do you just have to dig up all the junk first?

edit: shout outs to mr. ampersand in ascii world for teaching me the correct way to spell 'cthulhu'

idk if you figured it out yet but shrank mentions his distrust of gordon if you enter the swamp too early.

so you have to talk to gordon first on top of the mountain that the townspeople have been talking about; otherwise you have no reason to fight shrank

i've never played amnesia btw, is it good?

amnesia is good in that my friends had a good time watching me freak out as i played it. i find it super stressful to play but it's really well done imo.

i forgot to mention that i thought the hall of mirrors was a neat touch. somehow it reminded me of something rainwarrior said in a kickstarter blog post for lizard
:

"If you played the first 20 levels of Bubble Bobble without dying, a strange door would appear, giving entrance to a secret vault filled with diamonds, shooting stars, and scary music. The first time we found this room in the game, it profoundly affected me. I thought about it for days, drawing sketches and imagining what the strange writing at the bottom might mean."
