if you manage your time wisely you should be able to partake in both if you want to!! especially during the early couple rounds of s3xmoditmania which are not particularly difficult to get past (and voting periods as well). and also there are still plenty of people who are not in s3xmoditmania at all
^, although the lyceum's list of trackers/sequencers/compilers for any given format isn't necessary complete. for most formats it technically doesn't matter what software you use as long as your entry is the right file format.

addint to A-zu-ra, Jangler, Sinc-X I'd add that
for the current battle I only see 4 formats being promoted (chip battle art, pc engine/turbografx16, sega genesis/megadrive, snes nintendo/superfamicom)
We aim to respect the console's original limitations: what's technically possible and running entries on original hardware (despite the tools used to compose them or if custom tools were used. For that to happen on the consoles listed we suggest which tools to use)
With fl studio you would create tunes that "would sound like" the target consoles but they couldn't be played back on them.
wildchip hasn't been added to Summer Chip VII (yet) which would allow you to use fl studio.
yeah this is a little weird so far. i'm also hoping that more formats are unlocked once puke7 isn't somewhat awol
but otoh (here's where i get mean) god forbid you try something outside your comfort zone. even these three are all great formats; if a compo like this is "boring" to you it's probably because you and people who share that perspective didn't make an effort to make it interesting. i would personally love to hear more hes and sgen entries in general (and maybe spcs that take advantage of the neato stuff that snesmod has developed?)
botb majors are more than a dumping ground for premade nsfs and wildwhatevers. i understand that people prefer to write for certain formats and that's fine. but e.g. adlib is my main thing and even in winter chips it only shows up maybe 2/3 of the time, and you don't see me complaining :P

i'd be down with this if there were other formats other than snes, hes and genesis, like 2xSAP or AY. quite frankly i hate working with snes because of amk, i hate working with genesis because smps it's quite wonky, and deflemask's ui is terrible. same goes for hes.
i'd rather do something else, like 2xsap, adlib, god forbid c64 w/ goattracker or whatever.
or you can be a real action gamemaster and output the sound to a virtual audio cable (most players and emulators should support this) then record it so that you can be sure neither "desktop notifications" nor people jacking off in your room could get into your way
