ircatwork doesn't work with espernet (it will connect for a few seconds and then they will kick you out of the server - as it's banned due to "security reasons"). they've got some system of their own, that would require applying an account separately: http://www.esper.net/
i use miranda to connect to irc, but the client doesn't support multiple networks at once (and all my past days were spent on efnet). anyway, i also suggest miranda for yahoo/aim/msn/etc ... it takes up only 3megs of memory! better than gaim or trillian.

Well, thankfully, it's not totally ded, just majority of discussion that would otherwise be there, now happens on discord, and some people migrated (almost) completely, which effectively means that you can't reach them this way
